Google is continuously improving its PPC offering and one of the most important updates of the last few years was the release of PMAX or Performance Max ad campaigns. These revolutionary ad campaigns use machine learning and complex algorithms to largely automate the ad creation process.
If you have noticed the PMAX ad type in your Google Ads console but are unsure what it is or whether it’s beneficial I’ve got the answers. Below, I explain what this type of ad is, and its pros and cons so you can understand if it’s appropriate for your business.
What are PMAX Campaigns?

PMAX is an automated type of ad campaign available in Google Ads. It uses machine learning and advanced algorithms to automatically create ads that drive conversions. These ads can be displayed across the entire Google Display Network including:
- Search
- Display
- YouTube
- Discover
- Gmail
- Maps
It does this automation based on the inputs and information you feed it so the more you can give, the more effective the ads are. Once the initial inputs and goals are defined, the machine learning models create the ads, and optimize bids and ad placements using Google Smart Bidding system.
Where in traditional search ads you would specify keywords, with PMAX ads you input your creative assets (such as logos, images, videos, headlines and descriptions), specify a budget, and set goals like ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) and CPA (Cost Per Action) – PMAX then does the rest and spits out a series of ads while also doing ad testing, etc.
The key to making your PMAX ad successful is giving Google the right info and enough of it and this can include your marketing goals, budget, localised targeting info, data feeds (such as Google My Business and Google Merchant Center), and audience signals (Customer lists, Google Audiences, etc.).
How Can PMAX Campaigns Benefit Your PPC Strategy?

We’ve looked at the basics of PMAX and how it works, so how can your business benefit from utilising this type of PPC ad? The benefits for some advertisers are numerous and far outweigh the potential drawbacks, and I believe this is certainly an area of consideration if you want to boost your digital marketing efforts.
Great for Beginners
I get that Google Ads can seem intimidating for novice users and indeed if you are looking for assistance feel free to contact us and benefit from our marketing expertise.
However, if you want to try PPC marketing, PMAX offers a gentler entry point into this area of digital marketing. The fact that you can create one ad campaign that can be shown across multiple channels and achieve multiple business goals is fantastic and takes away the daunting task of trying to do this manually by creating multiple ad variations.
Fantastic Cross-Channel Coverage
Currently, PMAX campaigns are the only type of Google Ad where you can market across the entire Google Display Network. That type of coverage is difficult to ignore, and it gives you the opportunity to appeal to new markets that were previously untouched.
PMAX ads can be displayed on the following platforms:
- Discover
- Display
- Gmail
- Maps
- Search
- YouTube
Previously, you may have only targeted one or two of these networks such as search and YouTube, for example. Additionally, these campaigns needed to be created separately. PMAX thus reduces workload and gives you a far greater potential reach.
They can Automatically Push Improved Conversions
Conversions are one of the main metrics we look at when analysing the success of PPC ads. A conversion means that a customer acted; whether it’s signing up to an email newsletter, completing a form on your website, or making a purchase, for example.
With accurate tracking in place through Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics, Google PMAX ads can be directly linked to conversions, and you can place an emphasis on this by selecting a conversion goal during the initial setup of a campaign. The algorithms will then push for increased conversions and work to determine which ad types, channels, and copy will deliver the best results.
They Have the Potential to be as Successful as You Want
The results of Google PMAX ads speak for themselves and with initial testing in one of our client accounts we saw a profitable return on investment of 7305.04% from the initial budget allocated to their PMAX campaign*, this is just one of many examples where this new campaign type is helping businesses increase conversions, reduce CPA, and increase revenue. * January 2024 data
Indeed, PMAX ads have so much potential and can be as successful as you want providing you are willing to put in the effort to set the campaigns up properly in the first place.
And this is the key. PMAX is only as successful as your effort – if you spend little time entering data and sorting the initial input, the result will be underwhelming. Whereas if you go all out and feed the AI a wealth of information, the results should be superb.
Reduced Manual Work
PPC is often time consuming and the manual inputs soon stack up which means you get tied down with the process and can struggle to do other things.
PMAX cuts out much of this manual work and once you have done the initial setup and inputs, it virtually runs itself. As a result, you can concentrate your efforts elsewhere and look at other ways to scale and grow your business resulting in improved productivity and efficiency.
Brilliant Adaptability to Changing Consumer Trends

Without extensive market research and continual analysis, it’s virtually impossible for a marketing team to keep up with trends and changes with customer habits and spending. You could employ someone just for this role as part of your marketing team and still be a step behind.
This isn’t true with PMAX ads as underpinning the process is machine learning. The advanced algorithms can adapt on the fly and make lightning fast changes when things like changes in customer habits are detected.
It can easily account for things like seasonality, consumer spending trends, and changes in customer demographics infinitely quicker than a human could. This ultimately means your PPC campaigns become more efficient and adaptive.
What Drawbacks to PMAX Campaigns Have?
This type of Google Ads campaign is amazing and has many upsides, but we have to be realistic and approach PMAX from a non-biased viewpoint. It’s not perfect and there are drawbacks that you must consider before investing in this type of PPC marketing.
Less Control

A recurring criticism regarding PMAX is the diminished user control that it brings. Unlike creating a standard search ad or something similar where you can change virtually every aspect of the campaign, PMAX doesn’t offer that.
You complete the initial campaign setup, define your goals, and provide other information and that’s pretty much it. So yes, you have less control.
However, does that lack of control matter if the end results are the same or better? Perhaps not, so it is vital to ensure your tracking is accurate and you are seeing the results before investing more of your marketing budget in PMAX.
Limited Results if You Have Unclear Goals
To make PMAX ads effective you need to have clear goals and tell Google what you want in detail. This points back to my previous point of PMAX being as successful as you want – it can also be limited if you don’t give it enough information to work with.
If you don’t have all this insight, customer information, and targets, PMAX ads may not be the right solution for your business, or you may have to be satisfied with mediocre results.
Less Insight
In its current form, the reporting capabilities and analytics of PMAX ads is limited. You can’t glean as much individual insight on your ads and discover which ad format or combination leads to improved results, having this information to feed into your other PPC activities would be a huge benefit.
There have been some small steps in this, with Google adding more features, and the ability to use scripts and API platforms to get the most out of PMAX and make improvements. Remember that it was only introduced in 2021 so there is still plenty of room for growth.
It has the Potential to Promote Complacency
As with any form of automation or machine learning process there is the potential that you become complacent and too reliant on the service. Don’t let this happen. PMAX ads aren’t a complete substitute for human interaction and the automation doesn’t mean you can take the foot off the pedal.
You must remain diligent and proactive and this starts with the initial configuration and setup of your PMAX campaigns. If you slack off and put minimum effort into the setup you can waste your marketing budget and fail to use this type of PPC ad to its max potential.
Who Can it Work Best For?
- If you have an e-commerce business then you should be using this campaign type. PMAX has the ability to increase your purchase conversions and prioritise conversion value or cost per conversion helping to scale your business sales at a profitable rate
- We are also seeing successes with lead generation B2C businesses, the addition of PMAX has boosted the number of enquiries at a much lower cost per click that standard search campaigns
When to be Cautious
If you have a small budget and if your cost per clicks are extremely high then PMAX may not be the answer for you. In order to be successful, it needs data, and if there is not enough data in your account to learn from then PMAX will burn through your budget with no clear guidance on what works and what doesn’t.
