1. Don’t Speak Like a Business – Be Emotive and Human

A quick way to turn away your followers and make them continue scrolling is to sound like a boring, robotic business. Sure, I get that you are representing a business, but you don’t have to sound like one in your social media posts.

Humans are emotive beings and we react to emotive language and language we can identify with. Therefore, try to put aside the technical jargon and pre-rehearsed paragraphs and let your social media posts take on a more casual and human form.

Don’t be unprofessional, but write like you would speak, and write like you are having a conversation as opposed to creating a business presentation! By using emotive and human language, your followers are far more likely to engage with you and get invested in your business.

2. Use Images and Media to Make Your Posts Eye-Catching

It’s a simple fact that most people switch off from social media posts if they see a wall of text. The art of reading is sadly becoming less relevant and we now live in an age where multimedia is just as important as text.

To make your social media posts shine and to get people clicking on your content you should use multimedia elements strategically. This includes images, infographics, animated gifs, and embedded videos. Including one of these items in a social media post immediately makes it stand out compared to a post that only has a paragraph of text.

The most important part of this process, however, is to make the multimedia element relevant to your business and content. We all love seeing random memes and images of cats doing silly things, but does multimedia like this align with your business goals? Probably not!

Make sure the image or video is relevant to the content of the social media post, and that it actually adds value.

3. Create a Regular Posting Schedule and Stick to it

One of the main reasons I see businesses social media campaigns fail is a lack of activity and consistency. Many companies expect to gain hundreds of followers and enquires simply by posting a random link to one of their product pages once per month – social media marketing just doesn’t work like that.

Mapping content on a whiteboard

To get consistent enquiries from your social media profiles you have to be active and the easiest way to do this is to create a regular posting schedule as part of your content marketing strategy. There are automated tools and platforms available that can help with this such as Buffer1 but you could also use your email calendar or the calendar on your phone to set reminders!

In terms of regularity, this depends on the platform. For example, it’s recommended to post around 5 times per week on Facebook and LinkedIn, whereas many businesses aim to post 3-5 times per day on X.

4. Build Two-Way Relationships and Engage with Your Followers

How do you feel if you see that a business has liked your comment or replied to your post? I love it as it shows me that the business cares and that there is actually someone behind the profile – not just an AI robot and this is another top tip for social media marketing – engage with your customers and aim to build relationships.

Spend time liking posts, replying to comments, looking at hashtags, and interacting with the people who have taken the time to interact with your brand. The more visible you are, and the more engaging you can be, the more enquiries you should get.

This is because your brand awareness and reputation will improve and people will see that you are active and interested.

5. Create Content That is Helpful and Beneficial

Oftentimes I find that businesses take the wrong approach with their social media posts and concentrate too much on selling. Social media can be used as a tool for sales, but it works better as a platform for informative and helpful content as part of your content marketing strategy.

Your content should give real value to your customers – that could be tips on using your products, a real-life story to give them inspiration, or a funny example of how your product or service was used. If you give them real value, the sales and enquiries come naturally as a result.

Of course, including a CTA (call to action) in your social media content is important too and although the content should be helpful and engaging, you should still aim to push the customers towards a specific outcome you want.
