We covered what SEO is in a previous blog, so this time we are going to identify some of the key reasons why SEO is important for all businesses and organisations. Keeping this simple, I’ve decided to follow a numbering system for ease, rather than because one reason is more important than another.
Why is SEO so important?
So looking at why SEO is important, there are numerous blog posts that relate to this with some of them offering over 20 reasons. As usual I’ll provide what I see as the key reasons.
- Strategic thinking: The SEO process at the beginning starts with the key phrase research. For this research to be effective you need to think about your business from a strategic point of view. What products or services are your key priorities? What geographical area do I want to focus on? So SEO pulls you back to thinking strategically about where you are and where you want to get to in the future. Once you know this, the key phrase research can begin.
- More visitors: Good SEO means more visitors, and more targeted visitors to your website.
- More leads and sales: With more targeted visitors and with conversion optimization as part of the SEO process, you should also get more leads and more sales.
- Pivotal to all marketing activity: SEO should inform other activity. Whether PR, social media marketing or blogging, once you have your target list of key phrases, you can develop a plan to add more high quality, relevant content that target particular phrases already identified as important to you.
- Plays a big part in the buying process: from making you visible and enabling a potential buyer to find you, through to converting the visitor into a lead, a customer and also a referrer/promoter of your business, SEO can be involved in all parts of the buying process.
- Improved brand visibility: The higher you can rank on Google and other search engines, the greater your brand visibility and therefore brand awareness.
- Creates a better visitor experience: The structure of your website may change when you look at SEO. Generally SEO improves the visitor experience as your website visitor is getting the information they want in an easy to navigate format, which is exactly what the search engines want to.
- You can’t rely on pay-per click: With natural rather than paid clicks to websites accounting for anywhere between 75% and 94% of click throughs, it makes sense to undertake search engine optimisation. The actual click through rates from natural listings does vary but they are high.
