SEO: Top 10 Tips for SEO Success

Top 10 Tips for SEO Success by Key Principles

In my last blog, I wrote about the SEO Process and I will provide details on each element in the Process during future blogs. This blog covers my Top 10 Tips for SEO Success and is based on my experience of working with companies of various sizes on their SEO or search engine optimisation. I have focussed on tips that are under your control and that you can implement yourself.

  1. Key phrase research: Make sure you undertake thorough key phrase research. This is crucial as it is the foundation of your search engine optimisation programme.  It will impact all the other activity you undertake so be very thorough. Use Google’s Keyword Tool, any Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools data you might have available to you. If you’ve been running Google Adwords or other pay-per-click campaigns look at this data too.

2. Make sure you consider ‘long tail key phrases’: Basically phrases that have 3, 4, 5 or more words in the phrase account for over 70% of searches undertaken. These phrases generally offer better conversion rates as well as often having less competition. With less competition you are also likely to rank for these phrases more easily.  It therefore makes sense to consider them. Check out Jayson DeMers post on Search Engine Watch ‘The-Resurgence-of-Long-Tail-Keywords-in-SEO’ for a good article that summarises why the long tail is important.

3. Key phrase mapping:  Once you have identified your phrases, identify logical themes and map them across your website. You want to have a target key phrase for each page and where you have additional phrases you want to target you will need to plan and implement new content.

4. Putting your phrases on the page: The title tag is very important. The title tag should be no more than 70 characters including any spaces and should have the most important key words at the beginning. The title tag should also be unique for each page of your website.

5. Putting your phrases on the page: The description tag is also important. If used correctly, it will encourage searchers to visit your website over others listed on the page. The description tag should be no more than 156 characters in length including any spaces and should ideally include benefits and a call to action. It needs to be compelling to encourage click through and needs to be complete sentences.

6. Putting your phrases on the page: The headlines on your page should be H1 or H2 tags. If you can use your target phrase in your headlines. However more importantly, make sure it reads well.

7. Putting your phrases on the page: Make sure you include your target phrase for your page on the page itself. Include it in the headline, in the first paragraph and ideally in bold text. Use bold text to highlight important information as well as bulleted lists.

8. Use Search Engine Friendly URLs that include your target phrase: URLs or the website page addresses need to be real words. Pages that include a long list of numbers like product_details.asp?c=1&d=4&p={36511600-A363-47D8-8784-C858DD01A985} will not help your search engine ranking. Ideally each page URL (the part after your domain name e.g. after www.keyprinciples.co.uk/) should include the phrase that you are targeting for that specific page e.g. www.keyprinciples.co.uk/the-seo-process-by-key-principles/.

9. Adding more content that is relevant: The more quality, relevant content you have on your website the better generally. Quality content that is relevant and of value to potential visitors to your website is the key.  As an example since I started posting a regular blog update just a month ago, my website visitor numbers have increased by 25% and the time spent on my website has increased by 175%!

10. Images alt tags: This is the alternative text for an image when the user uses a text browser or when the user has turned off the display of images in the web browser application. If you roll over an image on your website does text appear? If so then you are ‘tagging’ your images. If not, tag your images and ideally and if it makes sense, make the tags relevant to the phrase you are targeting for that page. Better still, before you even add your image to your website, give it a relevant filename too.

Finally and not really number 11, don’t forget to measure your ranking and your progress. There are free and paid for Keyword Ranking Software Tools available. If you are going to put the time and effort into improving your ranking on Google and other search engines, it makes sense to track your progress.

Of course links into your website and social media marketing with likes, mentions, retweets are also very important. However for this post I have focused on your website and what you can do to help improve it’s ranking, so that you get more visitors, more leads and more sales. The Top 10 Tips for SEO Success here are all under your control as they relate to your website.

Happy SEO’ing everyone.
